11.1 TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES

11.1 LOADING PROBLEMS

Although most people get EWD to run first time, there are occassionally problems. These errors are almost always one of the following two.

11.1.1 NOTHING LOADS

This is the most common problem - when you run the ewd.exe file, the screen flashes but nothing happens (99% of the time the editor program will work though). Quite simply, your machine does not have enough free memory to play EWD. Try the following solutions :

If, after all this, the game still will not run then i'm afraid your machine simply does not have enough memory to play the full version of EWD. So that everyone can at least experience the game in some form, i have included a "reduced" version of EWD. This is the same as the full game, but without interviews or angles. Use "reduced.exe" to play this version.

If you still cannot get the game to work, even with "reduced.exe", then i'm afraid i have no other solutions, so please do not e-mail me.

11.1.2 CONVENTIONAL MEMORY

EWD unfortunately needs a lot of conventional memory to run. Please note that conventional memory is NOT the same as regular memory. Newer computers generally have less conventional memory than old ones, so if you have a brand new machine, there is a good chance that you will not be able to play the full version of EWD. However, if you do get a message saying you do not have enough conventional memory, then try this fix :

If you still cannot get EWD to run after doing this, then you simply do not have enough conventional memory available, and you will have to use the "reduced" version of EWD described in the previous section. Please do NOT e-mail me asking me for any other solutions, as i do not have them.

11.2 GARBLED TEXT

If you see "garbled text" when using EWD, this means that the "default font" is missing from your computer - this usually only effects Compaq machines. When you start the game, the very first screen you see is the "file check" - at the bottom of this are two graphics options called "normal graphics" and "safety graphics". Select the latter. You should now be able to read the text properly. While in safety mode, you will not be able to view 3-D text. You can also set the graphics mode from "graphics options" in the game options section
